MAAEA Mission/Purpose

Current Mission Statement (to be revisited and perhaps revised over the coming months)
MAAEA is a network of educators, administrators, and community workers seeking to meet the educational needs of the Asian American community.

Our mission is to:
  • Identify and meet the needs of Asian American educators in Massachusetts
  • Bring together Asian American educators of different backgrounds to create a support network
  • Identify and advocate for the educational needs of the Asian American community
  • Work together with other educational groups of color both locally and nationally
  • Collaborate with other sectors of the Asian and Asian American community to address issues of common concern
  • Encourage members of the Asian American community to enter the field of education

2014 Areas of Work (developed at March potluck)
  1. Outreach + recruitment
  2. Advocacy + increasing awareness of APIA educator and student challenges
  3. Educator support space
  4. Curriculum + teaching resources

Norms (Meeting)
  • Agree to Disagree
  • Step Up / Step Back
  • Confidentiality (What Happens at MAAEA Stays in MAAEA, i.e., the “Vegas Rule”)
    • Intent is to share helpful content without attribution (unless otherwise granted permission). Speakers should specify if what they say should be kept confidential. Share the plot, not the characters (names/schools). Ask permission before sharing. It is important to have a safe space for venting or for working through issues.

  • Focus: history of education for APIA students in Boston and challenges faced by APIA immigrant students. The distinction between Asian-American and APIA immigrant issues will be addressed.

    • Asian Immigrants in BPS: An Interactive Historical Overview and Community Discussion
    • The Hidden Side of Boston Public
    • Stakeholders
    • The Quiet History
    • The Untold Story
    • Breaking the Silence (or Interrupting the Silence): Telling the Untold Story of Asian Immigrants in BPS
  • Goal: 150 attendees (APIA teachers, non-APIA teachers of APIA students, admin, community partners, teacher prep grad students)
  • Headmasters will send official invitation, point people will follow up
  • Future events will expand to other areas in Massachusetts and other issues (e.g., World Languages)
