Happy New Year!
We've been busy this past several months since our summer gathering. We're hoping to keep more up-to-date and become a used blog, so visit back often!
One big accomplishment was organizing "Evening with the Superintendent" for December 18, 2007. It was an event that brought together teachers, community leaders and members, administrators, and youth workers. All together, about 50 people showed up through the night.
Professor Peter Kiang from UMass Boston gave an informative powerpoint presentation on "Education and Boston's Asian American Communities." A UMass Boston student, Son-Ca Lam, gave a moving performance on her experiences as an immigrant student in Boston Public Schools. And a panel of 4 BPS students ended the night with personal experiences of Asian American students of diverse background.
The Superintendent, Carol Johnson, was engaged and interested in all the information offered and seemed interested in continuing conversations and relationships with the Asian American community in Boston to better serve Asian American students.
We hope this is the first of such gatherings-- it was the first time many of the people in the room had come together for a common cause: Asian American educational issues. Come to a next MAAEA meeting to learn about what's happening with next steps!
