First Annual Social Justice Educators Conference 5/21/11

We had over 200 participants, and the event was a huge success. We hope you found the experience as powerful, engaging, and energizing as we did! If you weren't able to make it, it's not too late to stay connected and get involved. The demographic data provides some of the urgency. According to James A. Banks and Cheryl A. McGee Banks in Multicultural Issues in Education: Issues and Perspectives (2007), although 4% of K-12 students in the United States are Asian/Pacific Islander, only 1% of teaching force is Asian/Pacific Islander. Come and hear from a panel of educators from the Massachusetts Asian American Educators Association (MAAEA). They will discuss their organization, tell stories of what brought them into education and share what is both satisfying and challenging about their jobs. Grill-Off Winners!

Congratulations to MAAEA for their participation in the AARW Cookout Fundraiser on Sunday, Aug 29! The competition was stiff, but MAAEA grill masters Paul Yoon and Sarah Chang did not disappoint with their winning dishes: Kalbi and Mexican Grilled Corn. Thank you to all who came out to support AARW! Mexican Grilled Corn (Elote) Recipe Ingredients: 12 ears of corn * 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 1/2 cup sour cream 2 garlic cloves 4 limes cayenne pepper red chili powder paprika 1 cup Cotija cheese or grated Parmesan cheese (was mixed together at Grill-Off). *Corn used at Grill-Off was purchased fresh from Allandale Farm, 259 Allandale Rd, Brookline, MA. Great farm. Preheat oven to 350 °F. Place corn in husks directly on the middle rack of the oven for 30 minutes. After corn has cooled, remove the silk and husks. Break ears in half. While corn is baking, mix mayonnaise and sour cream in large bowl. Mince 2 garlic cloves and add to mixture. Add the juice from half of a lime and quar...

AARW Community Series: Summer Cookout Fundraiser

Fighting Anti-Asian School Violence: The Philadelphia Story

Saturday, July 24, 2010 3-5 pm Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center 38 Ash St , Boston, MA (off Oak St between Washington St & Harrison Ave) On December 3rd, 2009 two dozen Asian American youth were attacked by other students at South Philadelphia High School while school-personnel looked on. The Asian American students, supported by community members and others, have organized, marched, and met with an unresponsive school administration. A civil rights suit is being pursued. What happened? How did the students and community build an effective coalition? What is the legal case and situation? Did anti-immigrant sentiment play any role, and are Asian American students facing similar issues locally in Boston? What can we do?
